Let Go + Let In
As we step together out of 2020 and into 2021, let us take a moment to observe.
Our thoughts.
Our feelings.
Our physical selves.
Our current reality.
That click of the clock from 11:59 to 12:00 on January 1 may not guarantee that the world around us hits the reset button, but it does give us the opportunity to choose how we want to move forward into the new year.
What can we begin to let go of?
Expectations. One thing we have all experienced this past year is that no one knows what the next day or the next moment will bring. Allow yourself to be fluid with what is. As plans change, as the world around us continues to shift, shift along with it and keep an open mind.
Fear. Our mindset plays a big part in how we actively participate in life. If we move from a place of fear, we may miss out on the beauty that surrounds us. If you are feeling fearful, for any number of reasons, can you take a step back and instead see what can be gained from the experience? Overcoming an obstacle, strength, resilience, confidence—so much good can come when we don’t allow fear to win.
Judgment. We all made it through 2020 in different ways. Some hunkered down and got the amazing opportunity to slow down and be with family. Others learned a new skill. Some thrived while others struggled. Many were asked to step up and continue their work – the essential workers: our healthcare providers, first responders, store clerks, and business owners.
We all had to learn how to navigate the daily ups and downs, each a little bit differently. Honor that.
No matter how you got here, you did it! Show kindness to yourself and to all around you who made it through in their way as well.
What can we begin to let in?
Small wins. Every win is something to celebrate. Whether it’s accomplishing a long-time goal or completing a seemingly small task, take a moment to appreciate the win. The more we begin to see and celebrate all the goodness that happens around us, the lighter and brighter our days will be – and that energy is contagious!
Love. To give and receive love from someone or something really is one of greatest feelings. It’s a feeling of home. Of being seeing. And everyone deserves to be seen.
One of my favorite quotes is “Love is the most powerful force on the planet.”
And with it, we could change the world.
Connection. We are social beings. We need connection to our space, ourselves, and to others.
We are truly stronger together. And though “together” looks a bit different these days, finding ways to make that human connection can boost serotonin, strengthen our immune system, and enhance our overall well-being.
Pick up the phone, take a walk, tell stories, laugh, or share a real-life, unfiltered moment with someone who makes you feel good.
In a world full of algorithms, hashtags, and followers, know the true importance of human connection.
We learned a lot these last 12 months, but I think one of the biggest takeaways is that community is important, finding ways to connect is vital, and we will always be stronger together.
